Just like the colour-coded stickers you see on a new fridge or washing machine, it tells you at a glance how energy-efficient a building is and makes comparisons easier.

Properties are rated on a scale from A to G:

• A-rated: The gold standard. These homes are highly insulated, eco-friendly, and cost the least to heat.
• G-rated: The least efficient. These homes lose heat quickly, resulting in higher carbon emissions and much higher energy bills.

The rating is based on the building’s actual structure (like its insulation, windows, and heating systems) rather than how the people living there use their electricity.
